Xavier Volleyball Sweeps Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. - Xavier ended its first conference road trip of the season by sweeping host Fordham 3-0 in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday afternoon at Rose Hill Gym. The Musketeers defeated the Rams by scores of 30-27, 30-23 and 30-18. XU now stands at 11-5 on the year and 4-0 in A-10 play, while Fordham is now 11-7 and 1-2 in conference action.
Game one found Xavier jump out to the early 1-0 lead, one the Musketeers would not relinquish, off a kill by Danielle Skrajewski. Fordham kept the score close but with the score 9-8 in favor of XU, the Musketeers would mount a 9-3 run before a Fordham timeout found the score at 18-11. Xavier would allow the Rams to climb back into the game as the score was tied four times before the Musketeers could claim the three-point victory.
Xavier started the second game behind 3-1 before a 9-0 run would claim the 10-3 advantage for the blue and white. The run came behind three kills by Kate Duchek and gave the Musketeers the lead for good and XU would not trail for the rest of the match. Sophomore Jenni Horvath had four of her six kills in the match in the second stanza and finished the game with a .571 hitting percentage.
After winning the first two games, Xavier sealed the match with a 9-0 lead to start the third game. During that stretch, junior Danielle Skrajewski served five of her six aces on the match and the first nine points of the game. Duchek ended the game with four kills and hit .800, while Skrajewski finished with three kills and her five aces in the game.
Duchek was the only player to record double digit kills on the match as the senior finished with 11. She also added two service aces, two digs and three block assists. Classmate Jordan Brightwell was the only player with double digit digs as she ended with a match-high 10. Sophomores Jenni Horvath and Jill Quayle each finished with six kills, while junior Skrajewski and Astyn Bjorklund also added six kills.
Xavier controlled play at the net, as well as from the service line, collecting nine team blocks and 11 service aces.
Xavier will return to action on Tuesday night as the Musketeers welcome Morehead State to Cintas Center for a 7:00 pm match. XU's next Atlantic 10 opponent will come next Friday as the Flyers of Dayton make the trek to Cincinnati for a 7:00 pm matchup at Cintas.
