CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women's soccer team dropped its Atlantic 10 Conference opener 3-0 to the University of Dayton on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The loss dropped XU to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the A-10, while Dayton raised its records to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the A-10.
Xavier had a golden opportunity to go up 1-0 about 25 minutes into the match. Freshman Sara Doutt hit the post with a shot. Senior Angie Scarlato drilled a followup shot that was saved by UD goalie Niki Reed.
Dayton scored first at the 32:55 mark of the first half. After XU freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Cullins was unable to catch and control a UD shot, UD freshman Amanda Gallow was there to punch it in for the 1-0 Dayton lead.
The Flyers scored again at 40:03 as senior Katie Lowstuter crossed the ball to sophomore Jen Leslie, who finished it off for the 2-0 lead.
Dayton scored another insurance goal in the second half at 64:09. This time it was sophomore Kristen Persichini off an assist from senior Reba Sedlacek.
Dayton outshot Xavier 16-12, although held just a slim 10-9 advantage in shots on goal.
The Musketeers are home again next weekend for a pair of A-10 matches with Temple on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and Saint Joseph's next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
