CINCINNATI - Western Kentucky forward Daniel Payne scored two goals as the Xavier University men's soccer team lost 5-1 to Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. With the loss XU slips to 1-5-1 on the season while the Hilltoppers improve to 5-2-1 on the campaign.
The Hilltoppers got on the board first when Richard Mupfudze scored his fifth goal of the season after taking a feed from Clay McMillan. McMillan's ball created a one-on-one situation for Mupfudze and the WKU striker slipped the ball past a diving Adam Sokolowski at 15:58.
The Musketeers would knot the contest up at one goal a piece less than nine minutes later when junior forward Toni Skudrzik notched his first goal of 2005. Matt Kmetz played the ball to Jon Enders who struck a cross through the WKU goalie box. Skudrzik controlled the ball and struck it into an open net at 23:12.
The game-winner came in the second minute of the second half when Steven Medlock struck a ball from six yards out after taking a feed from Alex Sheikh.
Payne added his first goal just over two minutes later on an assist from Jacob Isenhour. The Hilltoppers notched their fifth and final goal at 84:37 when Joe German fed Will Fancher in the box.
Sokolowski made four saves including a couple acrobatic stops.
Western out-shot the Musketeers 21-to-7 on the afternoon. However, each team attempted ten shots on net.
Kyle Schroeder made nine saves in net for WKU.
The Musketeers are back in action on Wednesday, September 28 when they travel across town to take on Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m.
