
Musketeers Impressive in Opening Day at Wright State Invitational

DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier University men's tennis team opened up play at the Wright State Invitational with a 16-5 mark in singles play and a 5-2 record in doubles action on the first day of the seven-team, two-day event. XU's Mike Dieciuc, Ra'ees Ismail, Jeremy Miller, Brian Schubert and Adam Shaeffer each went undefeated in their respective singles matches.
In flight A singles, freshman Doug Matthews went 1-1 on the day including a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Wright State's Smith in the opening match of the consolation bracket. Junior Jeremy Miller posted a 2-0 mark on the day and advanced to the semifinals with a 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10) victory over Gratzk of Eastern Kentucky.
Ismail, Shaeffer and Rob Simpson combined for a 5-1 record in flight B singles action. Ismail recorded a 2-0 mark with two straight-set wins capped off by a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Dayton's Rex Cabrera in the quarterfinals. Simpson dropped his opening-round match, but recovered for a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Briscoe of Indiana Southeast in the backdraw. Shaeffer cruised into the semifinals with a pair of wins as the sophomore dropped just five games on the day.
Three Musketeers combined for a 7-2 mark in flight C singles. Dieciuc went 2-0 on day one and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 7-5 defeat of Morehead State's Orieux in the quarterfinals. Schubert also posted a 2-0 mark including a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Indiana Southeast's Leffler. Rustin Reys won his first two matches of the day before falling 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) to Morehead State's Smith. Brian Quinn went 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jackson of Wright State in his first match of the day.
Matthews and Simpson were perfect on the day in flight A doubles as the freshman and senior posted a 2-0 record highlighted by an 8-5 defeat of Dayton's Cabrera and James O'Connell in the opening-round match-up.
In flight B doubles, Ismail and Reys defeated Wright State's Hall and Hershner, 8-2, in their lone match of the day. Quinn and Schubert teamed for a 2-0 mark with both wins coming versus Wright State.
The Musketeers will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 1, at 9:30 a.m. for the final day of the Wright State Invitational.
