
Xavier Swim Teams Split Tri-Meet

CLEVELAND - In the first meet of 2006, the Xavier swim teams split a tri-meet with host Cleveland State and Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne. The men's team defeated the Dukes 114.5 to 74.5, while falling to the host Vikings 111-70. On the women's side, XU defeated Cleveland State 111-76 but fell to Duquesne by a score of 103-86.
Xavier's Krystel Kooyman finished the afternoon with two first-place finishes in the 200 breast and 200 IM. Kooyman touched the wall in a time of 2:26.37 in the 200 breast, while finishing the 200 IM in a time of 2:12.71. She also swam the second leg of the 400 Medley relay team that took second in a time of 4:03.67. Mary Catherine Mahon led off the relay, while Alissa Schriner and Dana Hunter swam the other two legs. The XU women dominated the 200 fly and 200 back on the afternoon as the freshman duo of Schriner and Jill Winhusen finished first and second in the fly with times of 2:11.86 and 2:11.92, respectively. Mary Kuhnen was the top finisher in the 200 back as the sophomore completed the race in a time of 2:11.16, while Mahon took second in a time of 2:11.43.
On the men's side, the Musketeers ended the afternoon with three total first place finishes. Senior Dave Jansen ended his time in the water with a first place finish in the 200 free (1:43.36) and a second place finish in the 500 free (4:42.95). Fellow classmates Kyle Hawley and Dan Milheim each earned the other two top spots, as Hawley took first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.51. Milheim took gold in the 50 free and touched the wall with a time of 22.04. Junior Neil Reierson grabbed second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.11 before all four swimmers ended the afternoon by combining for a first place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:11.24.
Xavier will return to the pool next Saturday as the Musketeers travel to Granville, Ohio to take on Denison. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
