
Women's Tennis Blanks Valparaiso 7-0 to Open Season

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Xavier University women's tennis team opened the 2006 season with a 7-0 blanking of Valparaiso on Friday evening at Matchpoint Tennis Club. With the win, the Musketeers move to 1-0 on the year while the Crusaders drop to 1-1.
XU opened the match with a dominating performance in the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Kara Courtney and Kristen Clary recorded an 8-1 defeat of Rachel Janssen and Jenny Schwartz. In the No. 2 position, Alicia Papa and Jackie Vilines teamed for an 8-1 win over Whitney Chada and Kate Evangelist. Kate Lohner and Sarah Potts completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 where the duo recorded an 8-3 win over Jill Dierberg and Charmaine Stanislaw.
The Musketeers maintained their dominance in singles play as five of XU's six wins came in straight-set fashion. Clary won the 90th match of her career as the senior defeated Janssen, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1. At No. 2, Vilines rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Dierberg. In the third slot, Courtney moved to 9-3 on the 2005-06 campaign with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Chada.
Papa ran her record to 10-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Evangelist at No. 4. At No. 4, sophomore Annie Diedalis picked up a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0 defeat of Stanislaw. In the sixth position, Potts cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kim Sajevic.
Xavier returns to action Saturday, Jan. 28, at 5:00 p.m. when the Musketeers will take on the 22nd-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at the Eck Tennis Center on the UND campus.
