LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In non-conference action on Wednesday night, the Xavier Musketeers fell to Louisville in four games at Cardinal Arena. Senior Astyn Bjorklund produced another season-best match but it was not enough as XU dropped the match by scores of 25-30, 30-27, 28-30 and 23-30. With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 11-9 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 12-6 overall.
After posting 20 kills in the opening match, XU could not combat only three hitting errors committed by Louisville and dropped game one by a score of 30-25. The Musketeers notched a match-high 20 kills in the game compared to only 14 by U of L but it was timely scoring that propelled the Cardinals.
Xavier took command early in the second game but would be matched by Louisville. The Cardinals would tie the score at 22-22 before a kill by Danielle Skrajewski and back to back blocks by Skrajewski and Bjorklund would give the Musketeers a three point lead and one they would not relinquish.
The third game would find 11 ties and 11 lead changes. A sloppy game in terms of attack errors would find the Blue and White on the short end of not only hitting percentage (.229-.171) but also on the scoreboard, 30-28.
In the fourth and final game Xavier took a 3-2 lead before Louisville captured the next point to tie the game at 3-3 and the following point to take the lead for good. Both teams would trade points until the Cardinals took the game and match.
Bjorklund turned in another season-high performance as the senior just missed her career high in kills by three. She ended the night with a season-high tying 22 kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Freshman Kelly Ruth posted her sixth career double double on the evening as the rookie notched 12 kills and 15 assists and was joined in the double double effort by Skrajewski who finished with 13 kills and 14 digs for her 46th career double double. Junior Jill Quayle rounded out the Musketeer attack with 12 kills, one solo and two block assists. On the backline, freshman Lauren Kaminsky continued to thrive at the libero position as she recorded a team-high 16 digs after a career-high 23 in her last match versus Temple. Junior Jenni Horvath added 13 digs to round out the XU players with double digit digs.
The Musketeers will return to Cintas Center this weekend for another Atlantic 10 home stand with Fordham and Rhode Island. XU will take on Fordham on Friday evening at 7:00 pm, while URI will visit Cintas on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
