Bjorklund Hits Milestone in Xavier Win

CINCINNATI - Xavier senior Astyn Bjorklund reached a career milestone and helped the Musketeers down visiting Temple in four games on Saturday night at Cintas Center. Bjorklund notched her 1,000th kill in the third game and finished with a match-high 22 kills on the night. The win moves Xavier to 11-8 on the season and 4-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while Temple falls to 10-10 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
After the Owls took the opening game, 24-30, Xavier responded to take the next three games and the match by scores of 30-24, 30-23 and 30-24.
Bjorklund established her new milestone in the third game as she gave Xavier the lead for good at 11-10, taking the assist from Welsh and knocking it home for her 16th kill of the game and 1,000th for her career.
Bjorklund led all players with her 22 kills and a .594 hitting percentage on the match. The senior also finished with a solo block and four block assists. Freshman Lauren Kaminsky also added to the career night by establishing a new career-high in digs with 23 on the match. Sophomore setter Jenn Welsh also dished out a season-high 67 assists in the win. Senior Danielle Skrajewski improved her career double double total to 45 as she finished with 19 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Kelly Ruth also recorded a double double on the match as she finished with 15 kills and 13 digs to notch her fourth career double double. Junior Jill Quayle rounded out the XU attack with 12 kills and seven block assists.
As a team, Xavier outhit Temple 75-64 in kills and held the Owls to a mere .188 hitting percentage, while causing 29 hitting errors and recording a season-high 14 team blocks and a dished out a season-high 73 assists.
The win by the Musketeers evens the all-time series at 15-15 with XU breaking a two match win streak by the Owls.
Xavier will return to the court next Wednesday evening as the Musketeers will travel to Louisville for a 7:00 pm match. The Cardinals hold a 17-0 advantage in the all-time series against XU. Louisville downed XU in four games, 3-1, last season when the Cardinals were ranked No. 6. The game one win marked the first time the Blue and White won a game against the Cardinals since the 2001 season when the match went to the wire with Louisville coming out on top 3-2.
