CINCINNATI - Senior forward Tara Boothe scored 17 points and tied her school record by pulling down 19 rebounds but the Xavier University women's basketball team could not overcome one of its worst shooting performances of the year and fell 63-55 to Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. With the loss, XU slips to 15-7 on the year and 6-5 in Atlantic 10 action. Charlotte improves to 16-5 on the year and remains in first place in the league at 9-1.
Boothe also recorded 19 rebounds on February 9, 2003 vs. George Washington. Boothe was 7-of-14 from the floor but struggled from the free throw line as the senior connected on only 3-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Senior forward Kristy Wallner scored nine points and hauled in eight rebounds. Wallner made XU's only 3-point field goal of the afternoon as the team was just 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) from long-range.
Junior guard Miranda Green joined Boothe in double-figure scoring with 14 points.
The Musketeers struggled to get into a groove offensively all afternoon as the team dished-out a season low six assists while committing 16 turnovers.
Xavier trailed 29-24 at the half and fell behind by as many as 13 points when Daniels hit a pair of free throws to make the score 49-36 with 7:20 remaining in regulation.
Xavier chipped away at the lead until it was at five points, 54-49, after Miller drilled a pair of free throws at the 3:50 mark.
XU would get no closer though as Charlotte hit its final six free throws of the game to ice it.
The Musketeers were an anemic 12-for-24 from the free throw line and shot just 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the field. The XU defense did clamp down and held the 49'ers to just 34.4 percent (21-for-61) shooting.
Xavier was out-rebounded 50-to-45 but held a 15-to-14 edge on the offensive glass.
Charlotte took an eight points lead when Daniels hit a free throw to cap off a 9-0 run and give the 49'ers a 16-8 lead at the 10:30 mark.
The Musketeers would answer with a 10-4 spurt to pull to within two points, 20-18, on a Boothe put-back with 5:20 remaining in the first session. Charlotte would answer with another run though and scored the game's next nine points to take a 29-18 lead with under two-minutes left.
XU would respond by scoring the last six points of the first stanza. Green's driving lay-up with two-seconds left closed the Charlotte lead to 29-24 at intermission.
Xavier will return to action on Friday, February 10 when the team travels to the Big Apple to take on Fordham. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
