The Xavier University women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker at Ball State University on Sunday. The Musketeers, who fell to 3-5 with the loss, led 2-0 with under seven minutes left in regulation but couldn't close out the win. The Cardinals raised their record to 5-1-2.
Today's loss offset a two-goal effort from senior Angie Scarlato. After a scoreless first half, Scarlato opened the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal at the 77:13 mark. She again found the back of the net four minutes later at 81:21 on a second unassisted goal off a breakaway.
Xavier held a 2-0 lead until Ball State finally found its offense with under seven minutes left. Amy Holst scored at 83:38 from 18 yards out off a rebounded shot. Just over three minutes later the Cardinals tied the score at 2-2 off a set play. Emily Rein scored on a header off a corner kick from Katelyn Alexander. The two teams went to overtime tied at 2-all.
The Musketeers were the aggressor early in overtime, hitting the post twice but failing to find the back of the net. Ball State would get the game-winner on a free kick by Sarah Leibel at 96:21 following an XU foul.
Xavier opens Atlantic 10 Conference play this Friday at Dayton at 5:30 p.m.
