WASHINGTON, D.C. - In its second match of the Atlantic 10 Conference slate, Xavier downed George Washington in four games at the Smith Center on Sunday afternoon. Three Musketeers notched double doubles with freshman Kelly Ruth earning the second of her career. Senior Danielle Skrajewski and junior Jenni Horvath each registered their second double double of the weekend and helped XU improve to an 8-7 record on the season and 2-0 mark in conference play. With the loss, George Washington drops to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in A-10 play. The loss for the Colonials also marks only their second loss at home this season.
After a stumble out of the gate in game one, 23-30, Xavier responded to take the next three games by scores of 30-24, 30-23 and 30-19. The Musketeers hit a mere .182 in the opening game but responded well to the loss by hitting .371, .406 and .286 in the following games and holding the Colonials to a .149 combined hitting percentage as a team.
The rookie Ruth earned her second double double of her career after notching 14 kills and a team-high 15 digs on the afternoon. Ruth also added one ace and two block assists. The senior Skrajewski continued to lead by example after recording a team-high 22 kills and 11 digs to earn her fourth straight and 43rd career double double. Following Skrajewski's example was junior Jenni Horvath who contributed 16 kills and 12 digs for her third career double double, which is her third in four matches.
Sophomore setter Jenn Welsh dished out 61 assists on XU's 69 kills in the match and increased her assists per game total to 13.16 in all matches and 15.38 in A-10 action.
The win pulls Xavier closer in the all-time series between the two schools as GW still holds a slim 11-13 advantage. XU has won the last five meetings over the Colonials dating back to the 2003 season.
The Musketeers will get back on the court this coming Wednesday evening as XU travels to Morehead, Ky. to take on Morehead State in non-conference action. The first game is set to get underway at 7:00 pm at Wetherby Gym. The Eagles lead the all-time series over Xavier by a 19-15 edge.
