CINCINNATI - With its 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-21) sweep of Charlotte Friday night, the Xavier volleyball team (17-6) continued its winning ways and improved to a spotless 7-0 in Atlantic 10 action. The Musketeers have won six consecutive matches and eight of their last nine contests. The 49ers fall to 10-9 overall and 1-4 in A-10 play.
XU was led by sophomore Hillary Otte with a team-high 14 kills and senior Jenni Horvath with a team-high 14 digs in the match. Also for Xavier, sophomore Kelly Ruth got under 13 digs and got above the net for two solo blocks while freshman Katie Russell tallied 11 digs. Horvath, Ruth and Russell all had nine kills on the night. Senior Jill Quayle smashed 10 kills and averaged a .421 hitting percentage (10-2-19).
In game one Charlotte took control early going ahead 3-1 before a Xavier charge tied the frame at five-all. The game remained close with 10 tied scores and three lead changes before XU used a 6-0 run to spread its advantage to seven, 26-19. The 49ers would not recover as the Musketeers took the frame, 30-24.
The second game started out much the same with the 49ers taking a 4-1 lead. After back-to-back Musketeer kills and a service ace by freshman Claire Paszkiewicz, XU tied the frame at seven apiece. Xavier took the lead for good after a kill by Horvath put the score at 10-9. Six kills from Ruth in the game lead Xavier to a second-frame win, 30-24.
Heading into game three with a 2-0 advantage, the Musketeers never trailed in the final frame. There were three ties in the third game, the last coming at 6-6. XU used a 5-0 run to close the frame, putting away the 49ers, 30-21, to take the match, 3-0.
Charlotte was led by Alma Arroyo with a match-high 15 kills and Carly Romberg with a match-high 25 digs.
