CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team used a 3-0 sweep of George Washington Saturday night in Cintas Center to improve to a perfect 8-0 in Atlantic 10 play. The Musketeers, 18-6 overall, were led by sophomore Kelly Ruth with a match-high tying 17 digs and senior Jill Quayle with 12 kills. The Colonials fall to 10-12 on the year and 2-4 in A-10 Conference action.
Also for Xavier, sophomore Lauren Kaminsky got under 14 digs on the night. Ruth added nine kills to her 17 digs and senior Jenni Horvath and freshman Katie Russell each had eight kills apiece.
The first game started off a little slow as neither team would hold more than a one point lead until a Colonial ball handling error put the Musketeers up by two, 8-6. There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the first frame alone and Xavier's final margin of three, 30-27, would be the largest advantage of the game.
Xavier would score first in the second game but George Washington battled to keep the frame close. The score was tied seven times by the time the two squads were knotted at seven-all. GW used a 5-0 run to take a three point lead, 12-9, but XU was able to tie the game again at 14-14. The Musketeers used a 9-4 run to close the frame with a win, 30-24.
Musketeer freshmen Chelsea Campbell, Noelle Spitler and Shannon Voors all saw action in the third game as XU jumped out to a 12-3 lead to open the final frame. The Colonials pulled to within five, 19-14, but that would be as close as GW would get. Xavier closed the frame with 10-5 advantage to take the third game, 30-19, and the match, 3-0.
George Washington was led by Janine Brown with a match-high 16 kills and a match-high tying 17 digs. Brown had the only double-double in the match.
Xavier returns to action next Friday, October 19, when it welcomes undefeated No. 14 Dayton (21-0, 8-0 A-10) to Cintas Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. XU's match versus Dayton has been designated as a "Dig for the Cure" match. The Musketeers are hoping to "Pack the Stands with Pink" in order to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and to increase breast cancer awareness.
