CINCINNATI - On a night to raise awareness for breast cancer research and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation the Xavier volleyball team definitely made a statement. The Musketeers handed unbeaten No. 12 Dayton its first loss of the year in four games, 30-25, 30-13, 21-30, 30-16. XU improves to 19-6 on the season and remains perfect in Atlantic 10 competition, 9-0, taking over the top spot in the A-10 West. Sophomore Kelly Ruth led the Blue and White with her 11th double-double of the year (15K, 18D).
The stands were packed with pink and the Musketeers sported pink jerseys as 1,249 fans were witness to Xavier's 3-1 victory over Dayton (21-1, 8-1 A-10) Friday night. Senior Jill Quayle posted 14 kills on the night and a match-high .316 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lauren Kaminsky got under 15 digs while senior Jenni Horvath and freshman Katie Russell each added 14 digs as well. Sophomore Hillary Otte smashed 11 kills and junior Jenn Welsh set 46 assists in the match.
There was only one tied score in the first game, 4-4, as Xavier controlled the entire frame. A solo block from Quayle capped off a 5-0 run by the Musketeers to put XU up, 9-4. The closest the Flyers would come after that would be four points as Xavier led by as many as 10. Dayton put together a 5-0 run with Xavier at game point before a Flyer service error sealed the deal. XU took the frame, 30-25.
In the second game the teams found themselves knotted at four apiece again before a 10-1 Musketeer run put the frame out of reach. The Flyers would only score eight more points in the second game as XU dominated the entire frame. Xavier used a 6-0 run to go ahead by 16, 26-10, before taking a 30-13 game-two victory. The two teams headed into the break with Xavier leading two games to none.
The Flyers were not ready to head home as they took any early 9-5 lead. The Musketeers pulled to within two but three straight UD points put the Flyers up, 14-9. XU was trying to get back in the game but Dayton rattled off four straight to close the frame, taking game three, 30-21.
With determination the Musketeers came out fighting in the fourth frame. The two squads were tied at four-all when XU went rattled off nine unanswered points to take a commanding 13-4 lead right into a Dayton timeout. Out of the break, UD tried to fight back but the Flyers would get no closer than to within five. The Musketeers closed the game with another monstrous charge, eight straight points, to take the frame, 30-16, and the match, 3-1.
For Dayton Jamie-Lee Richards had 14 kills while Adrienne Green had 17 digs on the night. Erin Schroeder had 42 assists.
