Also for Xavier, senior Jenni Horvath got under 20 digs and senior Jill Quayle tied her career high of nine assisted blocks to go with her 16 kills. Sophomore Lauren Kaminsky had 15 digs and sophomore Hillary Otte had 14 kills.
The first game started out in favor of the Mastodons as IPFW jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Although the Musketeers would cut the advantage to four, IPFW used run after run to hold the lead the entire frame. The Mastadons closed the first game with a 8-2 charge to take the frame, 30-19.
Game two played out in the opposite fashion as XU took a quick 5-2 lead after a block assist from Russell and Welsh. IPFW would cut the lead to two but would get no closer as the Musketeers maintained the advantage. Xavier ended the second game with a 9-3 run and tied the match with a 30-23 game-two victory.
Xavier controlled game three from the start to the finish. After jumping out to a 10-1 lead, the Musketeers continued to hold the advantage after several IPFW attempts to get back in the game. Back-to-back kills from Quayle put XU up by seven, 19-12, and the Musketeers never looked back. The game ended with Xavier on top, 30-21.
The Mastodons came out charging in game four and took an 8-2 lead early in the frame. The Musketeers cut the lead to five several times but could not overcome the deficit. IPFW took the fourth game, 30-24, forcing the tie-breaking fifth frame.
Both teams battled to the end as the game went past the regulation 15-point winning mark. There were 17 ties in the entire match and an incredible 14 of those ties happened in the fifth game. IPFW held match point at 14-13 but an assisted block from Ruth and Quayle kept Xavier alive. Back-and-forth the two teams went before two consecutive kills from Quayle sealed the deal for the Musketeers. XU took the game, 21-19, and the match, 3-2.
For the Mastodons, Peachy Jankowski had a match-high 35 digs and Rebekah Roehm tallied a match-high 18 kills.
The Musketeers will return to action on Friday, October 26, as they travel to Saint Louis to take on A-10 foe SLU. On Sunday, Oct. 28, XU moves on to Pittsburgh to face conference opponent Duquesne. Please continue to check www.GOXAVIER.com for the latest updates and stats.
