CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer team lost a physical match 3-1 to Massachusetts on a scorching Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
After 40 minutes of deadlocked play at 1-1, Massachusetts took the advantage at the 83:52 mark when Britt Canfield buried a header off Vanessa Patry's cross. Sydney Stoll also assisted the play for UMass.
Xavier opened the scoring with an early goal at the 8:06 mark from Melissa Zimmerman, assisted by Brittany Green and Kaitlyn McGoldrick. The goal was Zimmerman's fourth of the season and would be the Musketeers' only offensive strike of the game.
Just before halftime, Massachusetts squared the match at 1-1 when Kaelyn Caldwell sent a rocket from outside the box into the net over Kelly Farrell's reach. The goal, Caldwell's first of the season, was scored at the 42:49 mark.
Six minutes after Massachusetts took the lead for good, Canfield scored again on a breakaway at 89:37 when she countered one of many Xavier tries for the tie.
Xavier falls to 3-9-1 with the loss, including a 2-2-1 record in the Atlantic 10. Massachusetts improves to 7-2-1 with a 2-2-0 Atlantic 10 record.
Xavier and UMass matched their shot totals 10-10, though the Musketeers led with four shots on goal to the Minutewomen's three. The only caution of the match was a yellow card issued to Massachusetts' Kelsey Anderson at the 78:03 mark.
The Xavier women's soccer team will be back in action next Friday, October 12th when they travel to St. Bonaventure. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
