Volleyball Sweeps URI on Senior Night

CINCINNATI - The 2007 senior class of the Xavier volleyball team played its last home match on the Cintas Center floor Friday night and with style as the Musketeers swept visiting Rhode Island, 3-0. Seniors Jenni Horvath and Jill Quayle, who were recognized before the match, were the stars of the show as Horvath posted a team-high 11 digs and Quayle tallied a match-high 13 kills and had seven total blocks in the win.
The Musketeers (22-8, 11-2 A-10) will head to Charlotte next weekend for the Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 2 seed in the tournament as No. 16 Dayton earned the No. 1 seed. Saint Louis has also clinched a berth in the tournament and the field of six will be completed after this weekend's matches.
Sophomore Hillary Otte also had double-digit kills (11) in the match and freshman Claire Paszkiewicz set 23 assists to go with seven digs. Sophomore Lauren Kaminsky had eight digs and junior Jenn Welsh added 11 assists.
The first game was never in question as Xavier jumped out to a 7-1 lead off the strength of two kills and two assisted blocks from Quayle. The Musketeers maintained the advantage throughout the frame, taking game one, 30-10.
In the second frame the Rams (13-14, 5-7 A-10) kept the game close until the Musketeers used a 4-0 run to stretch their lead to seven, 17-10. XU's largest lead of the game was 10, which first came after a URI attacking error put Xavier up, 28-18. Ten would be the final margin as XU took a two-game lead, 30-20.
Rhode Island got its first lead of the match in the third game on the first point of the frame. A couple of points were traded between the two squads as the Rams kept it close. Xavier used a 6-3 run to close the game picking up the third-frame win, 30-22, and the match, 3-0.
For Rhode Island Caitlyn Welsh had 10 digs and three Rams posted six kills in the match. Kaira Kachadurian set 18 assists and as a team URI had five total blocks.
The Musketeers will return to action next weekend as they travel to Charlotte, N.C., to participate in the A-10 Championship. XU will first play in Match #4 at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. Please continue to check www.GOXAVIER.com for the latest updates and results.
