
Vanderbilt Offense too Much for Musketeers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the second game of the series, Xavier could not withstand a three-hit performance by No. 1 Vanderbilt's preseason All-American Pedro Alvarez and fell 10-3. XU mustered seven hits on the afternoon but gave up 11 in return. The Musketeers are now 1-9 on the season, while Vanderbilt stays undefeated at 13-0.
For the second straight game, Xavier jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after senior Jordan Wolf had an RBI-groundout to second. Freshman Drew Schmidt scored on the play after he singled to left to start off the inning. Classmate Pat Coffey moved Schmidt to third on a sac bunt after Neil Lindgren walked.
One costly XU error would haunt the Blue and White in the bottom of the fourth and allow the Commodores to plate five runs on only two hits. After the inning was over the score stood at 5-1 in favor of the home team.
VU would tally three more in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 8-1 but Xavier would respond with two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-3. Back to back doubles by freshman Zac Richard and Matt Waskerwitz would score Adam Pasono, who reached after being hit by a pitch, and Richard. Vanderbilt would answer with its final two runs in the bottom of the seventh to ensure the victory.
Schmidt had his best outing of his young career as he finished 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Waskerwitz and Richard had the only extra-base hits for the Musketeers, while Pasono, Lindgren and Adam Lipski each recorded a single in the contest.
Bill Konecny got the start on the hill for the Blue and White and went four innings allowing five runs, one earned, on only two hits. The senior had two strikeouts but gave up five walks to the 19 batters he faced in his 73-pitch outing. Sophomore Joe Kohler would close out the final three innings for XU and finished with a career-high three strikeouts in the longest outing of his career.
The Musketeers and Commodores will take the field for the final game in the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm at Hawkins Field. XU will have senior Mike Creevy getting his second start of the season.
