ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Xavier received another great outing on the mound by junior Charlie Leesman to shutout the defending Atlantic 10 Champion, Saint Louis, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center. The Blue and White used one-run innings in the fourth, fifth and eighth but that would be all XU would need as Leesman limited the Billikens to just six hits on the afternoon for the second straight shutout of the weekend. The Musketeers are now 9-18 on the season and remain a perfect 5-0 in conference play, while Saint Louis is 5-23 overall and 1-4 in A-10 action.
Xavier would drive in the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth as sophomore Sean Farrell led off the inning with a double to left. After a groundout by Adam Lipski moved Farrell to third, a Billiken error on a hit by Zac Richard allowed Farrell to score and put the visiting Musketeers up for good, 1-0.
Steve Brown got the rally started in the fifth as he reached on catcher's interference. A single by senior Jordan Wolf allowed Brown to get to third before Farrell drove him in after beating out the double play attempt for his first RBI of the day.
XU would tack on an insurance run in the eighth to round out the scoring. The Blue and White would finish with six runs on six hits to remain perfect in the conference, marking the first time that a Musketeer squad was an unblemished 5-0 since 2002. That 2002 squad actually started a perfect 6-0 before falling in the seventh game of the season to St. Bonaventure.
Leesman finished the game throwing a career-high 9.0 innings and facing only 33 total batters on the afternoon. He scattered six hits and issued only one walk, while striking out four.
Farrell would energize the offense as the designated hitter ended 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, triple and he scored two of XU's three runs. Freshman Zac Richard drove in the other run for the Blue and White as the rookie produced another strong showing at the plate, finishing 1-for-4. Jordan Wolf, Steve Brown and Neil Lindgren also had a hit in the game.
The Musketeers will return to action tomorrow afternoon as Xavier looks for the sweep in the final game of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm EST with XU's Michael Lucas (0-4, 6.06 ERA) getting the start. Saint Louis will send senior Eric Rohr (2-2, 4.30 ERA) to the mound.
