ELON, N.C. - Xavier could not get any offense going and failed to keep the Elon bats silent as the Musketeers dropped their matchup with the Phoenix, 11-2, in non-conference action at Latham Park. XU was outhit on the afternoon 13-5 and surrendered 10 earned runs. Xavier now stands at 1-11 on the season and Elon moves to 8-6 overall.
XU got on the board after Jordan Wolf belted his first homerun of the season but it was too late as that put the score at 4-1. The Phoenix would post seven more runs before Wolf again got the Xavier offense going as the senior reached on a single, advanced to second on a walk, third on a wild pitch and later scored on another balk.
Wolf finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with both runs scored by the Musketeers and earned the only RBI of the game on his solo homerun.
Freshman Zac Richard suffered the loss, his second of the season, and gave up 10 earned on nine hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Senior Mark Janszen threw the final 1.1 innings allowing only four hits and struck out one.
The Elon offense was seeing the ball well on the afternoon as 10 players recorded a hit, including left fielder Pat Irvine, who finished 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs.
The Musketeers will take a day off before continuing their swing through the Carolinas. XU and Duke are set to square off on Wednesday, March 7, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm.
