Toledo, Ohio - The Xavier volleyball team remains unbeaten after the first day of competition at the Rocket Volleyball Classic, defeating host Toledo, 3-1, in the last match of the evening. Two Musketeers posted double-double's in the contest as sophomores Lauren Kaminsky and Kelly Ruth led the team to victory. Xavier improves to 2-0 while Toledo falls to 0-2 for the season.
After a sluggish start to game one, the Musketeers were able to pull the score even to seven apiece after a kill by freshman Katie Russell. The two squads battled, trading points which resulted in several ties. Toledo went on a 9-4 run to open up a five point lead, 21-16, followed by a Xavier 3-0 scoring drive to pull the Blue and White within two.
With the Rockets up by four, 28-24, Xavier took a time out and freshman Claire Paszkiewicz was inserted into the game. Paszkiewicz quickly picked up three assists and the Musketeers forced the Rockets to take a timeout after three straight points. Two service errors ended the game with Toledo narrowly squeezing out the win, 30-28. Freshman Lauren Kaminsky led XU in the first game with five kills and five digs.
Xavier took control of the second game early and after a 6-1 run, which included three kills by Russell, the Musketeers took an 11-5 lead. The Rockets were forced to take a timeout when XU's lead bloomed to eight points, 14-6. Out of the break, Xavier exploded on a 10-3 run, segmented by yet another Toledo timeout, resulting in the Musketeers' largest margin, 24-9. A seven point burst by Toledo cut the lead to 10 but Xavier was too much for the host team, taking the second frame, 30-19, to even the match at one game apiece.
In the third game of the match two more freshmen stepped onto the court for the first time as a Musketeer. Chelsea Campbell and Shannon Voors were called up as XU and UT battled to a 9-9 tie and Xavier decided to take a break. With neither team giving in, the score fluctuated between one point advantages and ties until the Blue and White was able to rattle off four straight to go up, 22-18. Xavier scored three straight points off consecutive block assists by Quayle and Welsh to close out the third-game victory, 30-27.
The Musketeers took any early 4-1 advantage in the fourth frame and soon went up by five, 16-11. The lead was taken to five again after a Rocket attack error put the Musketeers up 19-14 in what would turn out to be the final game of the match. With Xavier's lead at 23-17, Toledo decided to take a minute to talk it over and then was able to break up the Musketeers' four point run. Yet, three more offensive errors caused the Rockets' deficit to slide to double digits, 28-18. XU took the game and the match with a 30-20 fourth-game win.
Two XU netters tallied double-double's in the Musketeers second match of the day. Kaminsky collected 13 kills and 13 digs in the match while Ruth had a career-high 18 digs and smashed 10 kills. Welsh dished out 39 assists and Russell posted a career-high 12 kills.
The Musketeers return to action on Saturday during the second day of the Rocket Volleyball Classic. XU is set to face Cleveland State at 12:00 p.m. and will wrap up play against IUPUI at 5:00 p.m.
