Netters Drop 3-0 Match to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - On the second day of the USF Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational, the Xavier volleyball team opened play with a 3-0 (30-28, 32-30, 30-24) loss to host San Francisco. XU moves to 9-4 on the season while USF improves to 9-4. The Musketeers will face Sacramento State later this evening with first serve set for 8 p.m. ET.
The Blue and White was lead by sophomore Lauren Kaminsky who posted a double-double (12K, 18D) in the loss. Senior Jill Quayle and sophomore Kelly Ruth both recorded a team-high 13 kills while senior Jenni Horvath and junior Megan Hellmann both tallied 11 digs in the contest.
Xavier and San Francisco keep the first game close through the first six points of the frame when the Dons went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Back-to-back kills from Kaminsky and Quayle followed by a service ace by Kaminsky tied the score again at 12 apiece. The Musketeers took over the advantage at 14-13 after Ruth smashed out a kill and they would hold the lead until the game was tied at 25-25. USF ended up with a two point lead at the end of the frame, 30-28, and a one-game lead heading into the second.
The Musketeers fell behind early in the second game before battling back to tie the frame at seven-all after two consecutive kills from Ruth. XU took its first lead of the game two points later, 9-8, when Horvath slammed out a kill. The Dons then used a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 14-9 and Xavier decided to take a minute to talk it over a few plays later.
USF lead by as many as six several times in the second game and XU cut the advantage to three at 24-21, causing a timeout by the Dons. After back-to-back kills from freshman Katie Russell pulled the Musketeers within one, 27-26, USF answered back with a kill from Addie Webster. Xavier called a timeout and out of the break fought to stay alive, tying the game at 29 apiece and again at 30-30. Since a team has to win by two points, the two squads continued play past the 30-point threshold until USF was able to take the a game-two victory, 32-30.
Xavier jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the third game before San Francisco would tie the game at three apeice. Later in the frame, USF took advantage of a 5-1 run to take a three-point lead, 16-13. Xavier used a scoring run of its own to retake the lead at 17-16 and forced San Francisco to take a minute to talk it over. XU held a three point lead, 21-18, before USF finished the game with a 12-3 run to take the game, 30-24, and the match, 3-0.
