Volleyball Falls to Sacramento State, 3-0

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Musketeer volleyball team dropped their second consecutive match Saturday night at the USF Asics/Coca-Cola Invitational, falling 3-0 to Sacramento State. Xavier (9-5) was led by sophomore Kelly Ruth who posted a double-double (15K, 18D) in the contest. Sacramento State improves to 11-3 on the season.
Senior Jill Quayle, who tallied 12 kills in the nightcap, was named to the USF Invitational All-Tournament team for her work over the weekend. Ruth also posted an impressive .355 hitting percentage (15-4-31) for the match.
All three games were kept very close with a total of 22 ties over the course of the match. Sacramento State took an early 4-1 lead in the first frame but Xavier battled back to take the lead at 10-9 on a Hornet attacking error. The two squads exchanged points all the way to the end with SSU coming out on top, 30-27.
In the second frame the Hornets again jumped out to an early lead, 5-1, but the Musketeers were able to tie the game at nine apiece on a Sacramento State attacking error. XU would take its first lead of the second game after a kill from Ruth gave the Musketeers the one-point advantage, 14-13. A late run by Xavier would not be enough as Sacramento State took the second game, 30-28.
It was Xavier's turn to burst out to an early lead in the third game, as the Musketeers went up by five, 6-1. XU continued to thold the lead until the Hornets were credited with a team service ace to knot the game at 16-16. Although the Musketeers would go up by as many four in the remainder of the frame, Sacramento State scored the last two points of the game. The Hornets took the game, 31-29, and the match, 3-0.
The Musketeers return home to the friendly confines of Cintas Center Sept. 21 as they open Atlantic 10 Conference play at home. Xavier will play host to Duquesne with first serve set for 7 p.m. Please continue to check www.GOXAVIER.com for the latest updates, stats and information.
