Volleyball Comes up Short Against Wright State

CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team fell to Wright State, 3-0, Tuesday night in non-conference action at Cintas Center. The Musketeers fall to 11-6 overall for the season while the Raiders move to 5-11 for the year. XU was led by senior Jill Quayle who posted a team-high 12 kills in the contest.
Also for the Musketeers, freshman Claire Paszkiewicz tallied a career-high 21 assists and got under a career-high 12 digs in the match. Sophomore Kelly Ruth had 11 digs on the night and freshman Katie Russell posted four assisted blocks in the match.
The Musketeers held the advantage early in game one after a kill by Ruth put them up 5-4 but the Raiders took a 7-1 run right into a Xavier timeout. Once the momentum shifted XU could not regain the lead. WSU took the first game by a margin of 10, 30-20.
In the second game, Wright State took a commanding 12-1 to open the frame. The Musketeers pulled to within seven but were unable to overcome the deficit. The Raiders claimed game two by the same margin, 30-20.
XU came out fighting in the third game, taking a 7-5 lead after three consecutive Musketeer kills. The frame would remain close throughout as the two teams traded points and leads. After a kill by Horvath gave Xavier its largest advantage of the game, 23-20, Wright State came right back with three straight points to tie the game. XU battled to the end but came up short, 30-27, in the third game.
The Raiders were led by Samantha Conner, who posted the only double-double (12K, 13D) of the match, with a .524 hitting percentage for the night.
The Musketeers return to conference play this Friday, Sept. 28, as they travel to the Bronx, N.Y. to face Fordham at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 29, XU wil square off against A-10 foe Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I., with first serve set for 4:00 p.m. Please continue to check www.GOXAVIER.com for the latest stats and updates.
