Volleyball Takes Down Fordham, 3-1

BRONX, N.Y. - The Xavier volleyball team picked up its third straight Atlantic 10 victory Friday night after defeating Fordham, 3-1, in the Rams' Rose Hill Gym. The Musketeers improve to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play while the Rams fall to 9-12 on the season and 2-1 in A-10 action.
The Musketeers were led by freshman Claire Paszkiewicz who tallied a new career-high 34 assists to go along with 10 digs for the first double-double of her career. Sophomore Lauren Kaminsky got under a team-high 16 digs while sophomore Hillary Otte posted a new career-high 20 kills in the match. Senior Jill Quayle had a .531 hitting percentage (18-1-32) for the night and sophomore Kelly Ruth also had 10 digs in the contest.
XU held the lead early in the first game until Fordham tied the frame at five apiece. The Musketeers regained the advantage at 10-9 after a Ram attack error but a 6-1 Fordham run gave the Rams the lead back at 16-15 and they would not relinquish. The Rams took game one, 30-27.
Xavier started strong in the second game, doubling Fordham at 8-4. The Rams pulled the frame to within two after a Musketeer service error, 14-12, but XU went on an 11-2 run to build a comfortable lead. Xavier took the second frame by a margin of 11, 30-19, to tie the match a 1-1.
Fordam broke out to a 9-0 lead to open the third game as Xavier struggled to score. The Rams continued to hold the advantage throughout the game until the Musketeers fought all the way back to tie the frame at 27-27 after a Fordham ball handling error. A service ace from Kaminsky and a kill by freshman Katie Russell capped off the comeback as XU took game three by two, 30-28.
With a one-game lead heading into the fourth game, Xavier took a one-point advantage, 5-4, after a kill by Otte. XU used a 10-3 run to stretch the lead to seven at 21-14. Fordham would only get to within five as the Musketeers picked up a 30-27 game-four victory to take the match, 3-1.
The Rams were led by Lauren Fitzsimon who posted the Rams' only double-double for the night with 10 kills and 15 digs.
