KINGSTON, R.I. - The Xavier volleyball team took three straight games from Rhode Island Saturday evening in its way to a perfect 4-0 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play at Keaney Gymnasium. With the win, the Musketeers improve to 13-6 overall as the Rams move to 8-10 on the season and 1-3 in conference action.
XU was led by senior Jill Quayle who tallied a match-high 16 kills on the night and sophomore Hillary Otte who posted a .714 hitting percentage (10-0-14) for the match. Sophomores Lauren Kaminsky and Kelly Ruth got under 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
The first game remained relatively close until a service ace by senior Jenni Horvath put Xavier up by five, 16-11. Rhode Island cut the lead to three, 20-17, after a kill by Kayla Newberg but XU stretched the advantage to seven, 27-20, after a kill from Quayle. Seven would be the final margin as the Musketeers took game one, 30-23.
The Blue and White jumped out to an early 8-0 lead behind the serving of freshman Claire Paszkiewicz to open the second frame. The game would never be in question as the Musketeers never trailed the Rams. XU used a 10-4 run to close the frame and took a second-game victory, 30-19.
With a two-game lead, the Musketeers took a 6-0 lead to open the third game. XU built upon that lead and held a 15-point advantage, 21-6, after a kill by Quayle. URI used a 4-0 run to pull within nine, 26-17, which would prove to be the final margin. Xavier took the game, 30-21, and the match, 3-0.
The Rams were led by Caitlyn Welsh with nine kills and Peggy Doino who had 13 digs.
XU will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 3, as it welcomes South Dakota State to Cintas Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Please continue to check www.GOXAVIER.com for the latest updates and stats.
