Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (14-25, 22-25, 19-25) decision Friday night to conference and intrastate rival Dayton at UD's Frericks Center. With the loss, XU falls to 14-12 overall and a 7-4 mark in A-10 play while UD improves to 19-8 for the year and 10-1 in conference action.
Junior Hillary Otte led the Musketeers with seven kills while senior Megan Hellmann got under a match-high 11 digs. Senior Jenn Welsh set 27 assists in the match and Hellmann recorded two service aces.
The first set was virtually never in question as Dayton jumped out to a 10-4 lead after an XU attack error. The Musketeers were unable to close the gap as the Flyers came away with a 25-14 first set win.
In the second frame, Xavier battled to the end as there were 14 tied scores and seven lead changes in the set. XU held the advantage for a majority of the set until the two squads found themselves knotted at 20 each. Holding set point, 24-22, the Flyers closed the game with a kill from Becky Novacek to claim the second set victory.
UD jumped ahead early in the third game, holding a 12-5 lead. XU cut it to four, 13-9, on a Hellmann service ace but the Flyers used 5-1 run to stretch the lead back to eight, 18-10. A kill from sophomore Shannon Voors set the score at 23-19 in favor of Dayton and after a UD timeout, the Flyers came out swinging. A Nicole Bateman kill ended the set with UD on top, 25-19, and the Flyers took the match, 3-0.
The Flyers were led by Bethany Akerhielm with a match-high 13 kills and four Flyers tallied nine digs on the night.
The Musketeers return to action Saturday, Nov. 15, as they play host to Duquesne at 4 p.m.
