XENIA, Ohio - The Xavier baseball team fell, 6-1, to the Youngstown State Penguins Thursday evening at the Athletes in Action field in Xenia, Ohio. Junior left fielder Steve Brown went 3-for-4 on the day, including two singles and a double, to lead the Musketeers' offensive efforts.
Youngstown State (2-8) got on the scoreboard first after a double from Sean Lucas sent in David Leon to give the Penguins the 1-0 advantage.
Xavier (3-7) scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third to tie the contest at one apiece. Sophomore second baseman Drew Schmidt was walked and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior center fielder Adam Pasono. After a balk by YSU pitcher Phil Klein moved Schmidt over to third, freshman third baseman John McCambridge grounded out to the shortstop to send home Schmidt.
YSU added another run in the fifth and then put together a four-run sixth to pull ahead by five, 6-1. Although Xavier threatened with the bases loaded and the tying run on deck in the seventh, Youngstown went to the bullpen as Joe Antinone came in as relief and was able to stop the threat when the next batter grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Charlie Leesman (0-2) took the loss for the Musketeers as he struck out two batters while walking one over 5.1 innings of work.
Klein (1-0) collected the win for the Penquins as he struck out five Musketeers and walked two in 6.1 innings of action.
Up next for the Musketeers is the third of four scheduled games versus Youngstown State. XU and YSU will play on Friday, March 14, on Xavier's campus at Hayden Field with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
