DAYTON - The Xavier baseball team dropped the last game of its three-game series with Dayton, 5-3, Monday afternoon at UD's Time Warner Cable Stadium. The loss moves XU to 6-10 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 conference play while UD improves to 11-7 for the year and 1-2 in league action.
Sophomore designated hitter Zac Richard was 2-for-3 for the afternoon with one RBI and sophomore second baseman Drew Schmidt, junior right fielder Sean Farrell and senior first baseman Robbie Kelley each added a hit as well.
Xavier started the scoring off in the first inning after Farrell doubled down the left line, putting him in position to score when Richard singled through the left side. XU was up by one early, 1-0.
Dayton answered with two runs in the second after two Flyer batters were hit by a pitch and Jimmy Roesinger's double scored both runners. After two innings, Dayton held the slim lead, 2-1.
The score would remain unchanged until the seventh frame when Xavier freshman third baseman John McCambridge was walked and Schmidt doubled down the left line. Junior left fielder Steve Brown struck out but was able to reach first on a passed ball and McCambridge was able to score. Schmidt then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, XU was leading, 3-2.
The Flyers put together a three-run seventh in order to secure the win over the Musketeers after Scoot Dunwoody singled to center sending home Kevin Miller from second. Max Navalinski was sent into the lineup as a pinch hitter and he singled through the left side for two RBIs as Dunwoody and Marshall McDonald scored. UD went ahead by two, 5-3, which would prove to be the final margin.
Freshman lefty Ben Thomas (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after giving up two runs in 0.2 innings of action. Starter sophomore Danny Rosenbaum put in six innings of work, striking out seven batters and giving up two runs off one hit.
