Baseball Falls, 5-2, at No. 8 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Xavier baseball team held an early 2-1 lead over No. 8 Kentucky but eventually fell, 5-2, to the host Wildcats Tuesday evening at UK's Cliff Hagan Stadium. With the loss, XU moves to 6-11 overall while UK improves to 21-2 with the win.
Sophomore second baseman Drew Schmidt and junior center fielder Adam Pasono each had multi-hit games, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Xavier starter freshman left-handed pitcher Tom Shirley (0-1) lasted six innings, allowed four runs, walked two and struck out four. Junior righty Joe Kohler worked the final two frames, allowing two hits and one run.
Kentucky got on the board in the first inning, as Ryan Wilkes singled, Collin Cowgill followed getting hit by a pitch and Brian Spear sacrificed him over with a bunt. A wild pitch allowed Wilkes to score from third.
Xavier got on the board in the top of the second, plating two runs on three hits and a Wildcat error. Senior designated hitter Dan Hayden led off with a single through the left side and senior catcher Tyler Aholt laid down a sacrifice bunt to first base, and was wable to reach on a Wildcat fielding error. Freshman first baseman Phil Bauer followed, ripping a double down the right-field line, scoring Hayden. Schmidt scored Bauer, with a single through the right side, making it 2-1 Xavier.
UK regained the lead in the bottom half of the fourth, plating two runs on four hits. Sawyer Carroll singled up the middle and stole second base, as Chris McClendon followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Carroll. Troy Frazier singled up the middle scoring McClendon.
In the seventh, UK added two runs to extend its lead to three, 5-2. Two singles and a double from the Wildcats sealed the win as Kentucky took the victory on a windy evening in Lexington.
Tyler Henry (1-0) picked up the win for Kentucky after striking out six XU batters and giving up only two hits.
The Musketeers return to action Wednesday, March 26, as they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a single game versus the Indiana Hoosiers. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
