AMHURST, Mass. - The Xavier University baseball team swept its doubleheader versus Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts Sunday at UMass' Earl Lorden Field. The Musketeers combined for 22 hits on the day as junior Jordan Conley and senior Robbie Kelley combined for four hits and five runs in XU's 10-5 first-game win and sophomore Zac Richard went 2-for-4 in Xavier's 3-2 second-game win.
Xavier (8-13, 4-1 A-10) broke open the first game early after putting up four runs in both the first and second innings. XU took advantage of three walks and three Musketeer singles in the first to get the game started and followed that with three more singles in the second to take the early 8-0 lead over the Minutemen.
Massachusetts (5-10, 2-5 A-10) got two runs back in the third and one each in seventh, eighth and ninth but it would not be enough to overtake Xavier's large lead.
XU also scored runs in the sixth and ninth innings as well, taking the first-game victory, 10-5.
Senior Michael Lucas (2-1) notched the win for the Musketeers after striking out seven while walking only one in 7.0 innings of action.
Brian Leigh (1-2) took the loss for the Minutemen as he struck out three and walked five in only 1.2 innings of work.
The nightcap was much closer as both squads were able to put up a run in the first and sixth innings. With the score tied, 2-2, in the top of the eighth Richard doubled to right center and senior Nick Egloff was placed on the bag as a pinch runner. Conley followed with a single bunt and Egloff was able to score the go-ahead run on an error by the pitcher. Xavier would finish the inning and the game ahead by one, 3-2.
Senior Mike Creevy (4-1) got the win for XU in the second game as he put in 2.1 innings of relief for starter sophomore Danny Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum struck out four batters while walking five and allowing two runs in 6.0 innings of work. Conley (2) picked up a save and ended the contest with an exclamation point - the last batter struck out looking.
Up next for Xavier is a five-game homestand beginning with Wright State Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Hayden field.
