CINCINNATI - Although the Xavier baseball team held a 9-1 lead, the Wright State Raiders were able to overcome the deficit and picked up the 12-11 win over XU at Hayden Field Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Bobby Freking went 3-for-5 on the day, scoring two runs and knocking in two RBIs for the Musketeers.
Wright State (8-13) quickly went up by a run in the top of the first on a double Justin Parker to score Jeremy Hamilton for the early Raider 1-0 lead.
Xavier (8-14) got a run back in the second after a single by sophomore Drew Schmidt sent home junior Jordan Conley. XU then put together a huge eight-run third to go up by a margin of 9-1. The Musketeers tallied four hits, four walks and had two hit batters in the frame. Freking scored on a single by senior Andy Zellers and junior Adam Pasono's double scored sophomore Zac Richard and senior Tyler Aholt.
WSU went to the bullpen as Jordan Wolfe relieved starter Bryce DeWeese and a double by freshman John McCambridge scored both Zellers and Pasono. Freking was walked to load the bases and Richard was walked, scoring Schmidt. The third consecutive walk of the inning, coming with senior Robbie Kelley at the plate, scored McCambridge. The Raiders went back to the pen, as Alex Kaminsky relieved Wolfe but XU got one more run in as Kaminsky balked with the bases loaded.
Wright State answered with seven runs in the fifth to pull within one, 9-8, and then went ahead, 12-8, in the seventh. After freshman Ben Thomas came in as relief for middle reliever junior Joe Kohler, the Raiders belted out two home runs, including a three-run shot by Jeff Mercer over the center field wall.
Xavier tried to overcome the deficit, getting two runs back in the bottom of the frame, but it would not be enough as Wright State took the 12-11 victory.
Thomas (0-2) took the loss for the Musketeers after striking out three while walking two and allowed four runs in 3.0 innings of work.
Kaminsky (1-1) got the win for the Raiders as he struck out one XU batter and walked three while giving up two runs in 3.2 innings of action. Michael Meintel collected the save for WSU.
Xavier returns to action Wednesday, April 2, as it welcomes Indiana State to Hayden Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
