Baseball Drops Close One, 6-5, to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Xavier baseball team tied its contest with Charlotte at five runs apiece in the top of the ninth only to have the 49ers rally in the bottom of the frame as Shayne Moody's walkoff single to center scored the winning run. The Musketeers fell, 6-5, to the Niners in the second game of the teams' three-game weekend series.
Junior Steve Brown and sophomore Bobby Freking both went 3-for-5 at the plate for the day. Junior Adam Pasono extended his team-leading and season-longest hitting streak to 14 consecutive games.
Charlotte (27-6, 9-2 A-10) started off the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the third as Ross Steedly sent a long ball over the left field fence.
Xavier (13-17, 7-4 A-10) got a run back in the fifth when Brown's single up the middle scored Pasono who had made it to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Drew Schmidt.
The Niners scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings before Xavier tallied a run in the top of the eighth to cut the Charlotte lead to one, 3-2. Junior Jordan Conley tripled down the left field line and was sent home on a Pasono single.
With two more runs scored in the eighth, Charlotte held a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame. Three consecutive Musketeer singles started off the ninth with Brown scoring on the third one. Conley's sac fly-out scored pinch runner freshman John McCambridge and junior Sean Farrell's double scored pinch runner senior Nick Egloff to tie the game at five-all.
With two outs and two runners on base, Moody singled to left center to score Corey Shaylor from second to win the game.
Senior David Hartman (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after allowing the winning run in the ninth inning. Senior Michael Lucas threw 6.0 innings, striking out three and walking one in the no-decision.
Kelly McClain (3-0) picked up the win for the 49ers after pitching 1.0 innings of relief. Starter Zach Rosenbaum struck out two and walked two in 6.0 innings of work.
Xavier and Charlotte will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at Hayes Stadium. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
