OXFORD, Ohio - The Xavier baseball team dropped a 7-2 midweek decision at Miami (Ohio) Wednesday evening after a five-run third inning by the RedHawks put the game out of reach. The Musketeers were led by junior Steve Brown who went 3-for-4 on the day with one run scored.
Also for the Musketeers, senior Dan Hayden was 2-for-4 for the day, including a double in the seventh.
After both teams went scoreless in the first two innings, Miami (11-23) broke out with five runs in the third inning. The RedHawks used six hits and left two runners on base in the frame and took the five-run advantage into the fourth.
Miami put another run up on the board in the fourth when Chris Nadeau homered to right center, increasing the MU lead to six, 6-0.
Xavier (14-19) got on the board with two runs in the sixth inning when junior Billy O'Conner singled to left field followed by a single by Brown. O'Conner came across on a double by sophomore Zac Richard and the RedHawks looked to their bull pen for some relief. Junior Jordan Conley grounded out to the second baseman but he collected an RBI as Brown was able to score on the play. Heading into the bottom of the inning, Xavier had cut the lead to four, 6-2.
But Miami tacked on a run in the sixth, as Nadeau scored on a Musketeer error, and MU took the 7-2 lead which would prove to be the final margin.
Freshman Tom Shirley (1-2) took the loss for the Musketeers after striking out three and walking none in 2.1 innings of work. Shirley gave up five runs before being relieved by junior Brett Greenwell, who put in 1.2 innings of relief. Freshman Ben Thomas came in at the beginning of the fifth, striking out three batters over three complete innings. Junior Joe Kohler closed out the game for XU.
Steve Antoniotti (2-0) got the win for the RedHawks as he was the pitcher of record when Miami first went ahead. He struck out two batters while walking none in 2.0 innings of work.
XU returns home April 18 for a three-game Atlantic 10 series with Saint Joseph's. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Hayden Field.
