CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team won its fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 series of the season Sunday afternoon with its 4-3 win over visiting Saint Joseph's at Hayden Field. Four Musketeer batters tallied multiple hits in the contest, including sophomore Drew Schmidt for his 12th multiple hit game of the year.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Danny Rosenbaum threw 8.2 innings with nine strike outs while walking only one, the first batter he faced. Junior Billy O'Conner went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs while junior Adam Pasono was 2-for-3 and hit in two RBIs.
Xavier (16-20, 10-5) got on the board first as Schmidt led off the first with a double down the right line and was advanced to third on a ground out by junior Steve Brown. Sophomore Bobby Freking followed that with a ground out to second, allowing Schmidt to score. XU took the early lead, 1-0.
The Musketeers scored another run in the second when freshman Phil Bauer's triple sent home junior Sean Farrell. But Saint Joseph's (14-23, 6-9 A-10) got one back in the fourth after back-to-back singles got a runner across the plate. Xavier head coach Scott Googins was ejected from the game during the top of the frame after an exchange with the first base umpire, yet, heading into the bottom of the fourth Xavier's lead was 2-1.
XU put up another run in the fourth after O'Conner singled and then advanced on a wild pitch, putting him in scoring position. Pasono doubled to left field and O'Conner scored XU's third run of the game putting XU up, 3-1.
Both the Hawks and the Musketeers scored a run in the sixth as SJU's Jeremy Jakubowski hit a solo home run to left field and XU's O'Conner scored on a single by Pasono.
The score remained 4-2 in favor of Xavier heading into the ninth inning. With two outs, Ben Wendle reached on a Musketeer error and Xavier called junior Jordan Conley in from shortstop to close out the game on the mound. Conley gave up two hits and a run scored but the final Hawk batter went down swinging as Xavier collected the 4-3 win.
Rosenbaum (2-3) got the win for XU after throwing 8.2 innings and recording nine strike outs. Conley got the save, his team-leading eighth of the season.
Don Werner (2-4) took the loss for SJU after striking out two batter and walking none in 5.2 innings of work. Quentin Farr threw the remaining 2.1 innings, striking out two as well.
The Musketeers return to action Monday evening when they head across town to face intracity rival Cincinnati. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Marge Schott Field.
