Baseball Falters in Midweek Matchup at Ball State, 14-4

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Xavier baseball team fell, 14-4, to the Ball State Cardinals in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Ball Diamond. Junior Jordan Conley knocked out his first home run of the season during the contest, a solo shot to left center in the seventh inning.
Junior Adam Pasono went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run for the Musketeers and freshman John McCambridge was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Ball State (22-14) took an early lead after putting up three runs in the first and another in the second off of five hits for the 4-0 advantage.
Xavier (16-22) got a run back in the top of the third after Pasono and sophomore Bobby Freking singled and sophomore Zac Richard followed with another single to score Pasono from third.
After the Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the third, XU put a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to cut into the BSU lead, 5-3. McCambridge singled up the middle to score Andy Zellers in the fourth and Zellers' sacrifice fly out in the fifth scored freshman Phil Bauer.
BSU broke the game open with three-run fifth and sixth innings. Conley's home run in the seventh was the final run of the game for the Musketeers as the Cardinals picked up the 14-4 win.
Freshman Ben Thomas (0-3) took the loss for Xavier after striking out five while walking two over 4.2 innings of work. Senior Kyle Cowden and freshman Tom Shirley combined for 3.1 innings of relief in the contest.
Brenden Stines (3-2) got the win for Ball State after throwing 5.0 innings while striking out three and walking two.
Xavier returns to action Wednesday as the Musketeers play host to Miami (Ohio). First pitch is at 3:00 p.m. at Hayden Field.
