CINCINNATI - After a thriller yesterday, the Xavier baseball team used a three-run home run in the sixth to seal a 5-4 win over St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers have now won at least two games out of all six three-game Atlantic 10 series they have played in so far this season.
Senior Robbie Kelley went 2-for-3 at the plate today, including a three-run homer in the sixth inning to secure the win for XU. Junior Billy O'Conner was 2-for-4 and scored a run for Xavier as he was the only other Musketeer with multiple hits in the game.
St. Bonaventure (20-18, 9-8 A-10) struck early, putting up a single run in the first inning off of two hits, and held the 1-0 lead through the bottom of the third.
Xavier (18-23, 12-5 A-10) was able to score two runs in the third to take the one-run advantage, 2-1. Kelley was walked and advanced to third on a double by junior Adam Pasono. Sophomore Drew Schmidt's ground out allowed Kelley to score and Pasono came around to third. With junior Steve Brown at the plate, Pasono was able to score on a wild pitch.
The Bonnies scored another single run in the fifth after Josh Sova's single to left center sent home Nick Cunliffe to tie the game at two runs apiece.
XU answered with a three-run sixth as sophomore Zac Richard singled to second and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jordan Conley. O'Conner singled to third base, putting runners on first and second as Kelley stepped to the plate. On the second pitch he saw, Kelley sent his fourth home run of the season to the left field fence, scoring three runs and giving X the 5-2 lead.
SBU scored one run each in the seventh and ninth but with two runners on and two outs in the final frame, a Bonnie popped up to the shortstop to end the game as Xavier came away with the 5-4 win.
Senior Michael Lucas (4-1) got the win for Xavier after striking out seven while walking two in 7.0 innings of action. Junior Brett Greenwell threw 1.0 inning of relief and Conley came in from shortstop to close out the game on the mound, picking up his ninth save of the season.
Cody Vincent (3-5) took the loss as he struck out two batters, walked four and gave up five earned runs on nine hits in his complete-game performance.
The Musketeers and Bonnies will complete their three-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. at Hayden Field.
