Baseball Falls to Cincinnati, 13-7

CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team fell, 13-7, Tuesday afternoon to the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats in a midweek matchup at Hayden Field. The Musketeers scored four runs in the eighth inning but it was not enough to overcome the UC lead. The two teams will meet again Wednesday at Marge Schott Stadium on UC's campus.
Sophomore Drew Schmidt led the Musketeers' offensive effort, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored on the day. Senior Robbie Kelley went 1-for-2, scored one run and collected three RBIs.
Cincinnati (26-17) got the scoring started early with a three-run first inning as the Bearcats used two doubles and a single along with an XU error to tally the runs.
Xavier (19-24) got a run back in the bottom of the frame after Schmidt singled and then advanced to second as junior Steve Brown was walked. Sophomore Bobby Freking hit into a double play but Schmidt was able to advance to third and was brought home on a double by sophomore Zac Richard.
UC scored two in the second and three in the third before XU got a run back in the bottom of the third. Schmidt doubled followed by a single from Brown. Freking again hit into a double play, but this time Schmidt came across for the Musketeers' second run of the game. Heading into the fourth, Cincinnati led, 8-2.
The Bearcats scored five more runs before the Musketeers put another tally on the board. In the seventh freshman Phil Bauer single to left and senior Nick Egloff singled through the left side to put two runners on. Schmidt singled to left to load the bases and Kelley's sacrifice fly out sent Bauer home for XU's lone run of the inning. UC was up, 13-3.
The Musketeers rallied in the eighth, scoring four runs on three hits as junior Sean Farrell led off with a double to right field. Bauer was walked and Egloff also took a base on balls to load the bases again. Kelley singled to right, scoring Farrell and Bauer, followed by a double from senior Danny Hayden which scored Egloff and Kelley. After eight complete, Cincinnati held the 13-7 advantage, which would prove to be the final score.
Freshman Brian Muranksy (1-5) took the loss for Xavier after striking out three batters while walking one in 2.2 innings of work. Senior Kyle Cowden and freshman Ben Thomas each contributed in relief.
Nick Johnson (3-1) got the win for Cincinnati as he struck out one while walking three in 5.2 innings of action.
Xavier will head across town Wednesday, April 30, for a game at Cincinnati with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
