CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team wrapped up its weekend series versus Richmond with a 9-2 loss to the visiting Spiders at Hayden Field on Sunday. The Musketeers were led by Sophomore Zac Richard who went 2-for-3, scored a run and was credited with eight putouts.
Xavier (11-15, 6-3 A-10) started the scoring off with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After two quick outs, sophomore Bobby Freking reached on an error by the third baseman and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Freking then made it to third on a wild pitch from Spider hurler Jared Bard and the bases were loaded with consecutive Musketeer walks. Junior Jordan Conley's single down the left line enabled both Freking and Richard to come home. XU took the early two-run advantage, 2-0.
Richmond (13-17-1, 5-4 A-10) broke the game open with a four-run second and a five-run third. Over those two innings, the Spiders tallied nine of their 10 total hits for the day as Mike Mergenthaler and Hank Coogan both collected two hits during that span.
Neither team would score anymore runs in the contest as Richmond came out on top, 9-2, in the last game of the three-game series.
Sophomore Danny Rosenbaum (1-3) took the loss for XU after striking out four while walking one in 2.2 innings of action. Senior Mike Creevy relieved Rosenbaum in the third and struck out six Spider batters while walking none and gave up no runs on only two hits.
Jared Bard (2-4) got the win for Richmond as he struck out four, walked three and gave up two runs on three hits.
The Musketeers return to action Tuesday, April 8, as they travel to Athens, Ohio for a non-conference matchup with Ohio University. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
