Baseball Takes 8-5 Decision from Ohio Bobcats

ATHENS, Ohio - The Xavier baseball team picked up an 8-5 win over the Ohio University Bobcats Tuesday evening at Bob Wren Stadium. The Bobcats led 5-4 after six innings, but the Musketeers brought four runs across the plate in the next two innings to walk away with the win. XU improves to 12-15 overall while Ohio drops to 15-13 on the season.
Junior Jordan Conley was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with three singles and a triple, in addition to picking up his team-leading fourth save of the season after putting in 1.0 inning of work on the mound.
Trailing 5-4, Xavier scored two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings in order to reclaim the lead and secure the victory. Junior Steve Brown led off the seventh with a single and sophomore Zac Richard reached on a fielder's choice. Brown was sent in on a single by senior Robbie Kelley and Richard scored on a single by Conley. XU held the one-run lead after the seventh, 6-5.
In the eighth, freshman Phil Bauer was walked and junior Billy O'Conner reached on an error. Both base runners were able to come across when sophomore Drew Schmidt sent a single up the middle to give XU the 8-5 advantage.
Junior Brett Greenwell (1-2) got the win after throwing 3.0 innings of relief. He replaced starter freshman Ben Thomas in the fourth and was the pitcher of record when Xavier retook the lead. Conley tallied the save.
Kevin Mementowski (0-2) takes the loss for the Bobcats, after throwing 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out one.
The Musketeers return to action Wednesday, April 9, at home versus Bowling Green State University. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Hayden Field.
