Baseball Cruises Past Fordham, 11-3

BRONX, N.Y. - After splitting a doubleheader yesterday, the Xavier baseball team cruised to an 11-3 victory over Atlantic 10 foe Fordham Sunday afternoon at Houlihan Park on the Rams' Senior Day. Sophomore Bobby Freking collected three hits and drove in two runs while junior Sean Farrell knocked in three runs to lead the XU offense.
Fordham (27-23-1, 11-13 A-10) got on the board first, picking up a run in the second. Bobby DiNardo led off the Fordham second with a double, was sacrificed to third by P.J. Como and scored on a Ryan David sacrifice fly.
The lead was short-lived as Xavier (22-28, 11-8) scored four times in the top of the third, all with two outs. Junior Steve Brown started the Musketeer rally with a two-out double down the left field line and Freking followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. A walk to sophomore Zac Richard loaded the bases for junior Jordan Conley who brought Brown in with a single. Farrell then cleared the bases with a double to right center to put XU ahead, 4-1.
The Rams made it a one-run game in the fourth as DiNardo doubled with one out and then stole third. Como delivered DiNardo with a double and a David infield single moved Como to third where he scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
XU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as Richard led off with a home run, his sixth of the year, and, one out later, Farrell reached on an error. Junior Billy O'Conner singled Farrell to third where he scored when freshman John McCambridge reached fielder's choice.
The Musketeers then took a commanding 11-3 lead with a five-run seventh, highlighted by a Freking two-run double and an RBI double from junior Adam Pasono, his team-high 17th of the year.
Senior Mike Creevy (6-2) got the win for Xavier as he tossed 2.1 innings of relief for the Musketeers. Starter sophomore Danny Rosenbaum threw 4.2 innings, one out short of the five complete innings necessary to get the win. Senior David Hartman and Conley eached tossed 1.0 inning of relief as well.
C. Kaible (1-2) took the loss for the Rams after striking out two, walking three and giving up five earned runs.
The Musketeers will be back in action on Tuesday, May 13, when they travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the BGSU Falcons at 3 p.m.
