BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green's Brian Hangbers' two-run walk-off home run cut short the Xavier baseball team's plans for a win Tuesday afternoon as BGSU picked up the victory instead in come-from-behind fashion. The mid-week non-conference contest was held at BG's Warren E. Steller Field. Sophomore Zac Richard and freshman John McCambrige both were 3-for-5 at the plate for XU.
Senior Tyler Aholt went 2-for-4 at the plate and collected two RBIs when he tied the game at four apiece in the sixth inning with a two-run home run.
Xavier (22-29) took the early 2-0 lead after scoring a run in both the first and second innings. McCambridge scored in the first and senior Robbie Kelley came across in the second after reaching on a Falcon error.
Bowling Green (28-18) tied the game up at two all in the home half of the second and then scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Falcons fell behind again in the seventh after Aholt's homer in the sixth tied the game at four and a single run in the seventh gave XU a 5-4 edge, which it had all the way up until the game's final play.
With two outs and a runner on first, Hangbers took junior Jordan Conley's 2-2 pitch and belted it over the fence in left center to bring Mark Galvin home with him, giving the Falcons the victory, 6-5.
Conley (1-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after giving up the winning runs in the ninth, although both were unearned. Junior Brett Greenwell started the game on the mound for XU, tossing 3.0 innings and striking out two Falcon batters. Freshman Ben Thomas threw 5.0 innings of middle relief, striking out three.
Earning the win for BGSU was Marty Baird, who improved to 1-2 on the year.
The Musketeers return to action Wednesday, May 14, as they play host to Morehead State at Hayen Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
