Volleyball Puts Brown Away, 3-1

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – With a 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22) win over Brown, the Xavier volleyball team tallied two wins in one day at the Stony Brook Invitational Saturday afternoon. Two Musketeers were named to the All-Tournament team as sophomore Claire Paszkiewicz picked up her first such honor and junior Kelly Ruth made the team for the third time this season.
The Musketeers had three in double-digit kills, with two posting double-double's. Junior Lauren Kaminsky recorded 14 kills to go with 14 digs while Ruth had a team-high 17 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Junior Hillary Otte tallied 15 kills and Paszkiewicz got under 18 digs. Freshman Emily Mayers recorded a career-high six kills in the match as well.
Back-to-back kills from Otte put Xavier (7-7) up 5-2 in the first set before a kill by Kaminsky led to a Brown (8-3) timeout. The Musketeers went up five, 9-4, but the Bears used a 4-1 run to get to within two at 10-8. Xavier rallied with a run of its own, rattling off seven straight to take the 17-8 advantage. Holding set point at 24-14, sophomore Chelsea Campbell laid down her third kill of the frame to take the set, 25-15.
XU recorded an incredible .419 hitting percentage in the first set compared to BU’s .086 mark. Xavier recorded three total blocks in the frame and 15 kills as a team.
The second set started off with Brown in control as the Bears took the 7-3 lead. Xavier got to within one four times before BU scored five straight right into an XU timeout at 15-10. A kill from Campbell and a Bear error knotted the two at 18-all. Freshman Mayers’ kill put the Musketeers up 21-20, the team’s first lead since 2-1, and the Bears called for timeout. Brown retook the advantage at 23-22 with a Xavier attacking error and eventually took the frame, 26-24.
Kaminsky tallied six kills in the second game to lead the Musketeers with three others posting three kills in the set as well for Xavier.
Consecutive service aces gave the Bears the early 7-3 lead in the third set but the Musketeers rallied with three straight kills to pull within one, 9-8. After a Brown timeout, sophomore Shannon Voors served up an ace and Ruth followed with a kill to return the lead to Xaiver, 10-9. XU stretched the advantage to eight, 19-11, after a 9-1 run that included Mayers’ career-high fifth kill of the match. Brown made up several points after a run of its own, forcing Xavier to call timeout at 21-17. The Musketeers found themselves holding set point at ahead by five and Voors served up another ace to take the frame, 25-19.
Xavier out-killed Brown 15-8 in the third set. XU committed six attacking errors in the frame but still out-hit BU .273-.121.
Brown raced out to a 6-1 lead to open the fourth game but Xavier quickly closed the gap to 9-8 after two Bear errors. The Bears would go up by as many as five but the Musketeers would not give up. XU rallied to score five unanswered points, including back-to-back kills from Otte, to tie the set at 20 apiece. After a kill from Kaminsky put XU up, 23-21, the Bears called their second timeout. After the break, a Brown attack error sent the ball into the net and handed Xavier match point. Kaminsky recorded the 25th point of the set as Xavier won the frame, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
