CINCINNATI -- The Xavier University women’s soccer team was undone by a 10-minute second half breakdown and lost 6-1 to Loyola Chicago in its home opener on Friday night. The loss dropped XU to 0-3, while LU raised its record to 2-3.
The first half was a closely contested battle. Loyola outshot XU 8-7 and the two teams went into intermission tied at 1-1. Loyola’s Casey Berrier scored the game’s first goal 16:40 into the match off a corner kick and assist from Cynthi Morote-Ariza. Morote-Ariza would finish the match with two goals and three assists. XU answered the LU goal at 31:46 when sophomore Kaitlyn McGoldrick served a cross to freshman Jessica Brooks, who put it away for her first collegiate goal and tied the score at 1-1.
Loyola broke the tie with a goal by Morote-Ariza just 2:04 into the second half. It proved to be the first of five Loyola goals in just over 10 minutes of action, giving the Ramblers a 6-1 lead at the 57:22 mark. That was also the final margin.
XU is off until next Friday when it hosts crosstown rival Cincinnati at 5:30 p.m. in the annual soccer crosstown shootout.
