ATLANTA - The Xavier volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Georgia State Yellow Jackets, 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 24-26), in its final match of the Regency Suites classic hosted by Tech. The Musketeers were led by juniors Kelly Ruth and Hillary Otte as Ruth posted a match-high 12 kills and Otte added 10.
Also for the Musketeers, freshman Claire Paszkiewicz set 31 assists and got under eight digs while Ruth added nine digs as well.
The first set of the match remained close throughout with Georgia Tech (5-0) and Xavier (4-1) tying the frame eight times before either made it to 10 points. The Jackets never went ahead more than three and the Musketeers were able to bring the set even again at 24 apiece off a kill from Otte. GTU was able to notch back-to-back points off a kill and service ace to take the first-set win, 26-24.
The Jackets used a 5-1 run to go ahead by four, 13-9, in the second set and did not look back. The Musketeers were not able to get closer than to within five, as a GTU service error notched the score at 23-18 in favor of the Jackets. Georgia Tech went on to take the frame, 25-19.
Xavier tried to mount a comeback in the third set as the Musketeers rallied with a 5-0 run on the strength on two service aces from senior Megan Hellmann to take the 8-4 advantage. The Jackets battled back to tie the frame at 14-14 and neither team would go ahead by more than two through the 24-point mark. With each team showing 24 on the scoreboard, a Georgia Tech kill followed by a Musketeer attack error gave the Jackets the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.
Up next for the Musketeers is their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 9, as Xavier welcomes Western Kentucky to Cintas Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
