OXFORD, Ohio - The Xavier men's and women's swim teams fell, 291-230, at Miami (Ohio) Saturday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Xavier touched first in 12 of 28 events in the dual meet but it was not enough as Miami took the win.
"We swam against some tough teams that may be a step above us right now, but we competed," commented head coach Brent MacDonald. "We learned a lot in an important early weekend of the season, but still have a ways to go as far as coming together as a team. Our goal is for that to happen by our midseason meet, the Akron Invitational."
The women (1-2) started off the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay with the team of junior Kari Peglar, senior Martha Cutter-Wilson, junior Bathanie Griffin and senior Alison Johnson (4:01.68). Griffin also turned in the fastest time in the 100 backstroke (1:00.62) and touched second in the 100 butterfly (59.61). Griffin also teamed with freshman Courtney Shields, Johnson and senior Elaina Suba to place first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.10).
Cutter-Wilson touched first in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.21), 200 breaststroke (2:25.83) and 400 IM (4:38.69). Peglar touched first in the 500 freestyle (5:15.79) and second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.87) while Johnson turned in a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (55.42).
On the men's side (0-2), junior Nathan Green placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:43.36), 500 freestyle (4:42.32) and swam the anchor leg of the first-place finishing 200 freestyle relay (1:26.58) along with senior Mickey Hafertepe, freshman Pablo Morejon and junior Terence Mahon. Freshman David Maxwell was the fastest swimmer in the 200 backstroke (1:55.88).
Sophomore Michael Zennedjian placed first in the 400 IM (4:11.55) and took second in the 200 butterfly (1:59.30). Mahon also placed second in the 100 freestyle (48.23) and third in the 50 freestyle (21.87).
The Musketeers return to action on November 1 when they head to Fishers, Ind., in a quad meet hosted by IUPUI. Along with host IUPUI, XU will compete against Butler and Evansville and the meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
