CINCINNATI - The members of the Xavier men's and women's swimming teams got their first taste of competition Satuday afternoon as the program hosted its annual Blue/White intrasquad scrimmage. XU also welcomed back several alumni members of the swim teams and they swam in between the Blue/White events.
The White Team came away with the win as the men and women combined for 107 points to the Blue Team's 89 points. Separately, the Blue Team women bested the White Team by one point, 49-48, while the White Team men were 19 points better than the Blue Team, 59-40.
The intrasquad scrimmage kicked off with the 200 medley relays and the White Team touched first on both the men's and women's side. In the 200 freestyle events, juniors Kari Peglar and Nathan Green took first place for the White Team. The 50 freestyle followed as freshman Randi Windemuller and junior Terence Mahon, both of the White Team, came away with the fastest times.
The Blue Team picked up its first gold-medal finish of the day as senior Martha Cutter-Wilson turned in the fastest time in the 200 IM. On the men's side, newcomer Sam Conchuratt followed with another first-place finish for the Blue Team. The 100 butterfly was next and juniors Bethany Griffin and John Roof were the winners in that event.
Senior Elaina Suba touched first in the 100 freestyle for the White Team and Green turned in the best time in the same event for the men. Freshman Rachel Chickerella placed first in the 100 backstroke while Mahon touched first as well. In the 500 freestyle, Green collected the sweep by winning his third event and junior Lindsey Barton placed first on the women's side of the event.
In the 100 IM, senior Alison Johnson and sophomore Michael Zennedjian took the gold and Cutter-Wilson picked up her second win of the day in the 100 breaststroke. In the men's 100 breast, freshman Garrett Keirns touched first. The meet wrapped up with the 200 freestyle relays and the White Team took first place in both of those as well.
The women's team will open its regular season next weekend as it travels to Marshall for a dual meet on Oct. 10. The men will kick off the 2009-10 season at Cincinnati on Oct. 23 and the women will be along for that meet as well.
