CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball teamed dropped a 7-4 decision to crosstown rival Cincinnati at Marge Schott Stadium Wednesday evening. The Musketeers were led by senior Jordan Conley and junior Zac Richard with two hits apiece.
Xavier (6-5) got the board early in the contest putting up two runs in the first frame. Senior Steve Brown got into scoring position after batting a single up the middle followed by a single from Richard. Steve moved around to third on a fielder's choice as junior Bobby Freking reached first. Conley was up next and his ball sent the right fielder to the fence as he collected three bases and two RBI on the hit.
Cincinnati (6-5) went three up, three down in the first as sophomore left-handed pitcher Ben Thomas struck out the side to open the game.
XU scored another run in the second before UC put up five in the bottom of the frame to take the 5-3 advantage. The Bearcats started the frame with three consecutive hits to get the rally going, including a double by Justin Riddell with an extra base on a fielding error that sent in UC's first run.
The Musketeers got a run back in the third when Freking singled to second base and Conley followed with a single to the pitcher. Senior Neil Lindgren was walked to load the bases and senior Billy O'Conner hit into a double play to get Freking across the plate. Xavier headed into the bottom of the frame trailing, 5-4.
The Bearcats' Lance Durham led off the third with a long ball over the right field fence and Riddell followed with a double to the same side of the field. Riddell would also score for the Bearcats in the frame as UC held the three-run lead, 7-4.
UC threatened in the fifth with runners at first and third but the Musketeer defense got Riddell out in a 1-3-6-3 run-down and Freking threw out Durham at the plate to get out of the inning with no damage.
The score would remain unchanged throughout the remainder of the contest as UC took the 7-4 victory.
Thomas (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after putting in one and a third innings on the mound. He gave up five runs off three hits and struck out three while walking two. Freshman Tyler Koors, senior Brett Greenwell and sophomore Brian Muransky put in work as relief.
Dan Glozer (1-0) got the win for the Bearcats, pitching 4.2 innings. He gave up one run on four hits while striking out three and walking one.
The Musketeers will head to Greenville, S.C., this weekend to participate in the Spartan Classic hosted by Michigan State March 14-15. XU will open with a noon contest versus Quinnipiac on Saturday followed by a nightcap against the host Spartans.
