Baseball Drops 9-1 Decision at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Xavier baseball team split its first two games of the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Challenge after defeating Georgia State, 5-1, and then falling, 9-1, to host B-CU Friday evening. Senior Jordan Conley collected two of XU's hits in the nightcap, including a single in the sixth that help score the Musketeers' lone run.
Bethune-Cookman (6-5) had three multiple-run innings in the contest including a four-run fifth. B-CU's Durrence blasted a three-run homer to left to put the Wildcats up 9-0 after five.
Xavier (4-4) scored in the top of the sixth as sophomore Ben Thomas led off the frame with a single followed by a sinlge from Conley and senior Sean Farrell to load the bases. Thomas made it home when junior Drew Schmist was walked to score the Musketeers' only run of the game.
Sophomore Tom Shirley (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers. He put in four complete innings of work, striking out three and walking none. Senior Joe Kohler pitched one inning of relief and freshman Tyler Koors closed out the game for XU.
Burgos (1-2) got the win for the Wildcats. He tossed six innings while striking out five and walking two.
The Musketeers return to action Saturday at the Spring Break Challenge with an 11 a.m. match-up with Michigan State.
