Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Fordham, Wins Series, 2-1

CINCINNATI - Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, the Xavier baseball team elected to play a doubleheader Saturday with visiting Fordham. The Musketeers won the first game, 4-2, and dropped the second game, 6-5. With the split, Xavier won the three-game series, 2-1.
Senior Jordan Conley went 2-for-3 and scored the winning run for the Musketeers. He also picked up the save, coming in from his position at short stop to toss the final inning of the contest. In the nightcap, senior Adam Pasono went 2-for-4 at the plate scored a run as well.
Xavier (20-14, 8-7 A-10) Went ahead early in the opener, scoring two runs in the second inning but the Rams answered with two runs of their own in the third. With Conley on second, junior Zac Richard singled plating Conley to take the lead back, 3-2.
Fordham (12-23, 8-6 A-10) would not score again in the contest but XU put up an insurance run in the seventh as sophomore John McCambridge scored on a single by Pasono.
Sophomore Tommy Shirley (1-3) got the win for the Musketeers, tossing seven complete innings. He struckout a career-high eight batters while walking four. Sophomore Brian Muransky threw an inning of relief and Conley picked up the save.
Max Krakowiak (0-5) took the loss for the Rams after putting in 6.1 innings of work. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking three.
In the nightcap, XU again took the early 2-0 lead and FU answered to tie the game after scoring one each in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, McCambridge took advantage of a wild pitch, crossing home plate to score the go ahead run to put Xavier up, 3-2.
Fordham rallied, scoring two runs in seventh to take over the lead and then two more in the eighth to put the game out of reach. After the top of the eighth, the Rams led, 6-3.
Xavier tried to put together a comeback in the bottom of the frame, as senior Billy O'Conner's two-RBI double sent in Pasono and freshman Matt Kleifges to pull the Musketeers to within one, 6-5.
The Rams failed to score in the top of the ninth, giving the Musketeers one more chance to catch them. With two outs, junior Zac Richard singled to center field and was replaced on the bag by freshman Danny Rinck. Senior Sean Farrell pinch hit for Kleifges, singled to center, and Rinck advanced to third on a throwing error by the center fielder. With a runner at first and third, the Musketeers were unable to convert as the last batter grounded out to the short stop. Fordham took the 6-5 victory.
Muransky (4-2) took the loss after throwing two innings of relief, giving up four earned runs. He struck out three batters while walking two.
John Flanagan (5-1) got the win for the Rams, tossing seven innings. He struck out three while walking eight and gave up two earned runs.
The Musketeers return to action Tuesday, April 21, with a trip to Richmond, Ky., for a 3 p.m. contest at Eastern Kentucky.
